About the Client
This company specializes in the refurbishment and re-roofing of existing, occupied buildings, acting as a main contractor. They handle projects involving flat roofs, traditional pitched roof materials (slates and tiles), and industrial sheeting and cladding. Their work includes high-performance built-up roofing felt, cold liquid applied membranes, slating, tiling, and sheeting/cladding systems. They also frequently undertake external refurbishment works as part of roofing projects, such as chimney stack re-pointing, external decoration, and window/rainwater gutter replacement. About the Role
The Senior Estimator will manage the estimating department, ensuring the consistent securing of orders at profitable margins to meet sales turnover, cash flow, and gross profit targets. This involves exercising sound commercial judgment to maximize opportunities and ensuring all tenders adhere to legal guidelines. Key responsibilities include site visits, detailed surveying (measurements, photographs, core samples), understanding technical and logistical requirements, and client communication to record specific needs. The role requires taking off quantities, preparing costs, and collaborating with colleagues to optimize proposals and profitability. The Senior Estimator will prepare comprehensive reports and specifications, submit tenders on time, and provide expert advice to clients. Developing strong client relationships, pricing additional works, and maintaining meticulous records are crucial. The role also involves managing workload to meet deadlines, following up on tenders, and ensuring all communications are professional and consistent with company values. Upon order receipt, the Senior Estimator will brief the contracts department and remain available throughout the project. Additionally, the role contributes to departmental strategy, staff development (training, mentoring, appraisals), forecasting commercial targets, implementing improvements, and overseeing recruitment. The Senior Estimator will stay updated on technology, identify contract opportunities/risks, improve operational standards, ensure inter-departmental synergy, and contribute to the senior management team with reports and strategic ideas.
About the Candidate
The ideal candidate will be well-presented and articulate, possessing a very strong understanding of MS Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook. Essential qualities include excellent organizational skills, strong time management, very good numeracy skills, and excellent written English. Candidates must have previous and extensive experience as a roofing estimator in a similar or senior role, along with a full and clean driving license. It is required that the candidate lives within a reasonable commuting distance (within an hour's drive) of the offices in Tolworth/Surbiton. Prior experience managing people and a department is necessary, demonstrating strong leadership capabilities. Furthermore, the candidate must possess excellent commercial knowledge and understanding. The role requires client visits in London and the Southeast, and a commitment to being in the office most of the time during induction and probation to learn company systems.
