About the Role
As an Estimator, you will be responsible for visiting and surveying prospective sites, taking photographs, preparing roof plans, and accurately taking measurements. You will need to consider all technical and logistical requirements , communicate with clients to record their specific needs , and take core samples or remove slates and tiles to ascertain roof build-up and structure, documenting with photographs. A key aspect of the role is identifying opportunities to improve conversion rates and company profitability.
Your duties will also include taking off quantities from records and preparing costs. You will discuss projects with your manager and colleagues to leverage collective experience and knowledge, ensuring the best approach for proposals to enhance conversion rates and increase profits. You will prepare proposals by writing reports and specifications based on your findings, supported by photographic evidence , and finalize and submit tenders and proposals on time.
Periodically, you will prepare reports, provide budget prices, and advise clients on solutions for building problems. Developing strong relationships with current and potential clients is crucial. You will also be responsible for pricing additional works and variations on live contracts. It is essential to carry out your work to a high standard, meticulously preparing tenders to meet profit margins and prices aligned with company objectives.
Managing your workload effectively to meet deadlines and tender/quotation return deadlines is important, prioritizing the most promising enquiries. Maintaining clear and accurate records throughout the pricing process, saving files appropriately, and adhering to company procedures is required. You will update the company's database with client interactions for accurate records accessible by other staff. Promptly following up on all quotations and tenders, recording outcomes, and sharing this intelligence with the sales and marketing Partner for top-level decision-making is also a key task.
Ensuring all customer communications are of the highest professional standard, clear, easy to read, satisfy client needs, promote the company's benefits, and consistently convey the company's vision, sales message, values, and corporate identity is paramount. Upon receiving an order, you will arrange a project launch meeting, prepare files and documents, and brief the contracts department on pricing and identified opportunities. You will also be available to the contracts team for queries throughout the project. You must always act in the best interest of the company.
The role may involve flexible and remote working options where permitted , but during induction and probation, a significant amount of time will be spent in the office when not on site to learn systems. You will need to visit clients in London and the Southeast to meet client and company deadlines. About the Candidate
- Professional Presentation & Communication: We are looking for a candidate who is well presented and articulate. Excellent written English skills are crucial for preparing reports, specifications, and client communications. The ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and colleagues is paramount.
- Technical Proficiency: A very good understanding of the MS Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook, is essential for this role. You will be using these tools for various tasks including record-keeping, report writing, and general communication.
- Organizational & Numerical Acumen: You must be highly organized with strong time management skills to effectively manage your workload and ensure all deadlines are met. Very good numeracy skills are also required for taking off quantities, preparing costs, and pricing additional works.
- Relevant Experience: Previous experience working as a roofing estimator in the same or a very similar role is a key requirement. This experience will ensure you understand the specific nuances of estimating for roofing and external refurbishment projects.
- Logistical Requirements: A full and clean driving licence is necessary, as you will be visiting sites and clients in London and the Southeast. You will also need to live within a reasonable distance from our offices based in Tolworth/Surbiton (e.g., an hour's drive). While flexible working options exist, during your induction and probation period, a significant amount of your time will be spent in the office when not on site, to facilitate learning our systems and procedures.
