About the Client

I am currently working with a specialist contractor who are a market leader and substantially growing in Central Florida at the moment.

They are in the market for a Party Chief to be responsible for leading a survey crew in the accurate and timely layout and verification of all structural concrete elements on construction projects.

About the Role

  • Field Survey and Layout:

    • Lead and manage a survey crew (typically 1-3 people) in the execution of all field surveying activities for structural concrete elements, including foundations, slabs, columns, beams, walls, and specialized concrete structures.

    • Perform precise layout and staking for all concrete forms, reinforcing steel, embedded items, anchor bolts, and other critical elements according to blueprints, shop drawings, and civil/structural plans.

    • Utilize and operate various surveying equipment with precision, including total stations (robotic and conventional), GPS/GNSS systems, digital levels, and laser scanners.

    • Collect, process, and analyze survey data, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

    • Conduct as-built surveys of completed concrete work and prepare accurate documentation.

    • Perform calculations related to grades, elevations, alignments, and quantities.

    • Interpret complex engineering and architectural drawings, specifications, and survey data.

  • Team Leadership and Management:

    • Supervise, train, and mentor junior survey crew members (e.g., Instrument Operators, Survey Technicians) in proper surveying techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.

    • Delegate tasks effectively and manage the daily workflow of the survey crew to meet project schedules and deadlines.

    • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment within the survey team and with other project personnel.

  • Quality Control and Assurance:

    • Implement and enforce stringent quality control checks on all layout activities to ensure accuracy and compliance with project specifications and industry standards.

    • Verify the accuracy of field survey data, including measurements and calculations.

    • Maintain meticulous and legible field notes, survey logs, and other required documentation.

    • Identify and resolve any discrepancies or conflicts between plans, field conditions, and existing survey data, escalating issues to project management as needed.

  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to and promote all company and site-specific safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

    • Conduct daily safety briefings and ensure the safe operation and maintenance of all surveying equipment.

    • Identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions to ensure a safe work environment for the survey crew and others on site.

    • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal surveying and construction regulations.

  • Communication and Collaboration:

    • Communicate effectively and proactively with the Project Superintendent, Project Manager, Foremen, Engineers, and other stakeholders regarding layout progress, challenges, and solutions.

    • Attend project meetings as required to discuss layout needs, schedules, and coordination.

    • Provide technical support and insights to project management regarding surveying and layout considerations.

    • Liaise with external surveyors or consultants if applicable.

  • Administrative and Equipment Management:

    • Manage and maintain surveying equipment, ensuring it is calibrated, in good working order, and properly stored.

    • Perform administrative functions such as completing timesheets, expense reports, and equipment maintenance logs.

    • Assist in estimating survey time and resources for upcoming projects

About the Candidate

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, or a related field is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in construction surveying, with at least 2-3 years in a Party Chief role, specifically on structural concrete projects.

  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting a variety of modern surveying instruments (e.g., Trimble, Leica, Topcon total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, digital levels).

  • Strong understanding and practical application of surveying principles, including control networks, coordinate systems, datum conversions, and conventional survey methods.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex structural, architectural, and civil drawings, as well as specifications and technical documents.

  • Proficiency in surveying software (e.g., Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation) for data processing, analysis, and layout calculations.

  • Solid understanding of construction math, including geometry, trigonometry, and basic algebra.

  • Excellent leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
